COMMUNITY LEARNING

The Girls Foundation of Tanzania celebrated International Literacy Day in early September with three dozen neighborhood children. They visit the Community Library every day after school to learn English reading, speaking skills, and math with the help of librarian Grace and TGFT girls. English is the language of secondary school, an essential skill to advancement in education.

Joseph joined the afterschool program and became the first in his family to graduate from secondary and high school. He is now studying at university and giving back as a volunteer at the Community Library. You can hear from him—and get a tour of the library—at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl1ivvxC1dE.

The Library greets visitors inside the main gate of the Girls Foundation campus. A covered courtyard unites the library with a sewing room and multi-purpose classroom. There, two professors and 14 students from Babson College led a Youth Entrepreneurship Program for 68 local students in June.  A four-day workshop facilitated by E3empower Africa provided digital literacy, business models, design thinking and leadership skills for 96 students from TGFT’s partner schools - Kiranyi Secondary School; Faces for Hope; and Tropical Pesticides Research Institute.

Bookshelves made by a local artisan have room for lots more books.  You can donate to fund afterschool resources for local children, or help equip girls sponsored by TGFT for their studies at:  https://www.girlsfoundationoftanzania.org/donate .
