It was an honor and a pleasure to be joined by Mark and Aimée Bessire of Africa Schoolhouse and Beth Rockefeller, Nano Chatfield and Alma Garnett on October 24, 2025 to accept a Citation Award for the Girls Centre in Arusha, Tanzania from the New England chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Twenty-six projects were awarded to firms based in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The jury recognized The Girls Centre as “a simple yet spectacular response to both program and place. Built with modest means, the design achieves remarkable impact through careful detailing and a clear, cohesive architectural language. A series of modest buildings organized around a brick-lined courtyard creates a village-like setting that is welcoming, functional, and beautifully scaled.

“The architecture is both resourceful and dignified. Deep roof overhangs, operable windows, and clerestories provide natural cooling and daylight, eliminating the need for mechanical systems. Rainwater harvesting, permaculture gardens, and durable, locally sourced materials ensure the campus is resilient and self-sustaining, even in the face of unreliable municipal infrastructure.

“As jurors noted, the project is ‘extremely well done for the budget.’ Beyond efficiency, it is also inspiring: a place where simple forms and carefully crafted details add up to a composition of extraordinary grace. The Girls Centre demonstrates how architecture can empower communities, creating environments of learning, safety, and joy through thoughtful design.”
